Now fix the cracked, damaged, or broken frame by filling dents or marks. Use a colored timber filler and make sure it adjusts with the new paint.

Apply the stuffing and leave it for a while to dry. 

You can change this part (damaged frame) by using glue and new wood.

Change the loose screws and bolts with new latches and fix them carefully.

After installing new screws, cover them with wood filler or plugs. 

Apply primer to the bed frame

You can apply the primer with a small roller, spray paint, or brush. There are oil-based and latex types of primer then you should use the first type of primer if you have a new wood frame.

You can use a latex primer when old paint is damaged.

It is an additional step of painting, but it gives you more benefits.

You can use the primer when you go with a lighter tint from dark colors when your frame has smudges that you want to hide.

Use polyurethane varnish

It is utilized to protect the frame surface and enhance the appearance or value of the furniture. Apply multiple layers of it with the nylon or foam brush.

Make sure not to apply an extra or thick layer and leave it for 8 to 9 hours.

Never paint on the wet layer of polyurethane varnish because it can spoil the surface and provide a rough look to the bed mechanism.

You have to apply around three layers of polyurethane and, if you are applied too many varnish layers, it makes the frame plastic-like and cloudy.

Choose the high quality and oil-based varnish since low quality gets pale over time. In addition, it is durable and resistant to water, heat, scrapes, and chemicals.

Let the paint dry

Now pertain the last layer of paint and varnish and leave the frame for about two days or until it is dry. Make sure to keep it in a well-ventilated place and assemble all the parts of the bed.
