During family gatherings, functions, and parties, you cannot place your leather sofa outside on your lawns because some drops of water are enough to damage them.

Water also remains its stains on the sofa that are difficult to remove. Use different methods to remove its stains from the couch, including rubbing alcohol, dishwashing soap, and use leather cleaners.

They are not waterproof; that’s why many people complain that their leather sofas are damaged if they place them in the open.

Apply Wax coating

Wax is a simple, easy, and cost-effective method to make the leather resistant to water.

Before applying wax, you must have completely clean the sofas. Remove all the dust particles or water drops from them.

Take a wax according to the size of your furniture and add it to a small pan. Place the pan on a medium flame for 2 to 3 minutes and wait for its melting.

Turn off the flame once they are melted and then cool it for 3 to 5 minutes.

Do not take much time for the cooling process because it can become harden again and difficult to apply.

Now take a brush or a dry towel, dip them in the wax, and apply their layer on the sofas. Apply maximum to layers for better protection against water.

Then use a propane torch to melt it on the sofa, then allow it to dry for 10 to 20 minutes. Then spill water on the water is not absorbed in the couch due to a layer of wax.

This wax layer act as a strong barrier against moisture.

Use of soap

Take any soap and crush them, then mix it with oil. Blend this mixture and apply its layer on the couch.

Air-dry the leather couch before applying soap to them. If your sofa is wet, it cannot stay for a long time.

Use a brush to apply them to the furniture. After that, take a damp cloth and remove this mixture. It will remove soap, but oil remains there, and it makes the couch water-resistant.

The use of soap also makes it smooth and maintain their shine and suppleness.

Dry it for 5 to 10 minutes for better results.

Use of silicon sprays

Manufacturers commercially use silicon sprays to waterproof the leather furniture. These sprays are readily available in markets, and they are the best water-repellent.

After applying these sprays, you can place your furniture outside, and the humidity in the environment cannot damage your couches.

Cover the wooden parts of the sofas and place the cushions aside. Then start applying this spray from one corner and then move towards the other one.

Carefully apply this that you should not let a small patch without spraying them.

Then turn on the fan to dry, and then you can sit on them comfortably.

Use of polythene covers

Polythene covers are also the best solution, but they are short-term solutions to make the leather couch waterproof.

Many people complain that they have a party in their home at night, but they cannot place their leather furniture outside because the humidity in the air can damage them.

Here is the solution for them to use polythene covers when they want to place their furniture outside on and off.

These covers do not allow the water to stand on the couch.

It is also a cost-effective method for making the sofas waterproof when you need them.

Apply leather sealants

Treat the couch with leather sealant; it is the most commonly used method for making them resistant to water.

Dry spray is more beneficial to use on the couch to make them resistant to water.

Clean it with the vacuum cleaner and remove all types of dust and debris from them. Then clean them with a damp cloth, then allow them to stand for 5 minutes for drying.

You cannot apply leather sealant sprays on wet sofas. First, use them in a small area to check they are not causing discoloration or damage to the couch.

Turn on your vents fan, then carefully apply the dry sealant spray covering every portion of the couch. 

If you have a liquid sealant, apply it with cloth on the surface in a circular motion and do not rub it on the surface. Then dry it for 15 to 25 minutes.

Use of mink oil

Mink oil is used as a conditioning, softening, and best waterproofing agent for leather. Mink oil forms a thick layer of fatty acid on the couch and inhibits moisture and water entry.

Before applying this oil, read the tags that it is safe for your sofa or not. Then take a clean cloth and clean your couch thoroughly.

Now use a hairdryer to warm up them for better absorption of oil slightly. On the other hand, take oil in the bowl and also warm it.

Now take the soft sponge, dip them in the oil, and gently apply them on the upholstery leather seats. Then clean the extra oil with a paper towel and allow it to dry for 16 to 18 hours.

Then spill some drops of water; if water gets absorbed, then apply the second coat.

Apply baby oils

The use of baby oils also makes them waterproof and maintains the smoothness of the leather sofa. It is the cheapest and home-based method to protect your furniture from water.

Take a baby oil in the small bowl, then dip a sponge and apply it to the cleaned surface of the leather couch.

Apply 2 to 3 coats and then let it dry for 1 to 2 hours for better protection.

Now water cannot be absorbed and prevents damage.

Use of plastic covers 

Due to environmental conditions, more moisture resides on your sofa. Use a plastic cover on the couch in these conditions to protect it from water damage.

Wrap plastic covers and leave some space so air can pass through them quickly. If you are entirely air-tight, the plastic covers it can also damage its fibers.

The use of these sheets is short-term protection against water due to fluctuations in environmental temperature.

Use of waterproof products

Different waterproof products are also available in markets that make the leather sofas resistant to water because it is most important to protect them from water.

You can purchase these sprays from markets, and they are also safe to use on couches.

The use of these products is also a quick and easy method. You can apply these sprays or creams on the couch for some time then dry them.

The mixture of cold water, wax, and olive oil

Take a bowl and add olive oil, and wax according to the size of your couch. Also, take cold water in another pan and place this pan on the medium flame.

Now place the bowl with olive oil and wax on the cold water. Stir the mixture with a spoon continuously until all the wax mix with oil.

Then remove the bowl from flame and then cool it for 3 to 4 minutes. On you clean its surface, apply this cream mixture. Apply at least to coats for best protection against moisture.

Use of coconut oil

The use of coconut oil acts as moisture repellent and maintains the shine, and makes them look new.

Coconut oil has a fat layer the water cannot easily absorb when you coat them with this oil.

Take coconut oil in the bowl and dip a sponge in it. Apply this on the sofa to make it resistant to water and protects it from damage.

Which type of leather sofas are waterproof?

The sofas that are made up of Semi-aniline leather undergo the process of tanning and are finished by a water-resistant coat.

This coat protects the surface from water spills. The sofas manufactured with semi-aniline are the most durable and have extra protection against liquid spills.

Full-grain leather is also the most resistant type and water cannot get it remains on its surface. 

Faux leather does not allow moisture to absorb on its surface. This type is highly resistant to water and also long-lasting.
