Why Do Mattresses Have Buttons?

Some mattresses have different types of buttons on them. It is a traditional type of bedding that is in high demand. These studs are not for decorative purposes but give us many benefits.

Why Do Mattresses Have Buttons? Mattresses have buttons to hold the multiple layers of the bedding together and keep it in proper shape. These prevent the sagging and sliding of mattresses, give support to our back, and enhance the durability of the foam. Sometimes these buttons can make people uncomfortable, but most people do not feel their presence.

Hold the layers of fiber together

Button tufting is a technique that uses different studs to join different layers of fiber in bedding.

These tiny buttons are essential to keep the mattress firm and rigid. The bedding is made of multiple layers of fibers or synthetic and hybrid foam.

The threads are inserted into the layers of the mattress and hold the wool or cotton layers together. They keep the knitted thread in place to keep the layers even and in shape.

They do not let the thread get loose over time and give your matters a fluffy texture.

Without these buttons, there are greater chances that the threads can break and the layers can fall apart. Firm and rigid mattresses can bear more weight and do not get thinner with time.

Prevent sagging of the mattress

Sagging in the mattress is due to excessive pressure and load for a prolonged period. You will see that this portion will not bounce back when you stand up from the bed.

The button on bedding can prevent sagging by giving strong support to the mattress fiber. It keeps the layers intact, and the fiber is evenly distributed on all sides of the mattress.

As a result, the cotton or wool of the bedding will not break and provide a smooth surface. Even stud tufted bedding can support obese people and provide extra comfort and flexibility.

They hold the layers firmly in their sewn position to maintain the balance and thickness of layers.

These studs also reduce normal wear and tear of the material by protecting the fabric from deformation.

Provide support and comfort

When it comes to comfort and support, studs on mattresses play an essential role. They do not let the bedding sink and keep supporting your back while sleeping on it.

It allows airflow by keeping the surface even, and heat does not make the fiber saggy. A mattress without buttons becomes soft and bulgy after some time due to poor heat transfer and airflow.

It can make our back pain even worse. It also helps us in correcting our posture and relieves shoulder pain. They help maintain the neutral spine alignment and reduce the neck and shoulders strain.

The buttons serve as a support to our pressure points and relieve the stress in our bodies.

It’s even, and the firmer surface can give you more comfort by reducing motion transfer due to changing position during your sleep.

Enhance the durability of the mattress

Buttons can increase the lifespan of the bedding to many folds by maintaining the integrity of the layers of foam or organic fibers.

On average, a medium-density mattress can last for about 6 to 8 years button tufted beddings are more durable. They can last for up to 8 to 12 years.

They hold the material of the mattress in their place and fix the threads to inhibit the sliding of layers.

The material will not wear out over prolonged use and hence increase the life expectancy of the mattress.

The buttons prevent the upper layer from degradation by absorbing excessive weight and pressure.

Less sliding of the mattress

Buttons can prevent sliding of the mattress fibers by keeping the fibers fixed and locked with the help of threads.

The layers inside the bedding start to break and can not maintain their balance. They easily slide due to motion transfer and can not maintain the upright position on the frame.

You can lose balance while sleeping and fall on the floor. The button-tufted beddings will not suffer from this problem because buttons maintain the compressed and fluffy position of the layers.

In pocket spring mattresses, they hold the spring connected and intact on their position.

It will help maintain the elasticity of coil springs, and the mattress will not slide from its position.

So you can continue to sleep on your favorite side without worrying about the sliding of the bedding.

What kind of mattresses have buttons?

Usually, organic or natural material containing bedding is button tufted.

Most common cotton is used in multiple layers in this type of bedding to make a comfortable sleepover. Latex and wool are also used as a filling in it.

These fibers are easy to pack into pockets to hold the layer together.

Threads are also easy to insert to stitch the layers in a covering. In such beddings, plastic buttons are used to hold the fiber in its place.

In some bedding wool or velvet, buttons are also used. Usually, pocket sprung mattresses have buttons tufts to keep the bedding in shape and prevent bulging.

Some memory foam mattresses also have buttons on their uppermost comfortable layer.

The foam is cut into thin layers for button tufting, and soft wool buttons are attached to make it rigid and firm.

Can buttons make the mattress uncomfortable?

Buttons on the bedding are usually comfortable to many people. But some sensitive people can feel something is digging into their skin when they sleep on it.

You will feel the presence of plastic buttons, but it will not bother you. High-quality mattresses cover the plastic shells with soft wool or cotton pompom.

In such cases, you will not feel them. But in low-quality button tufted bedding, it can bother you. You can spread thick bedsheets to prevent them from making you uncomfortable.

I surveyed 854 people and asked them about their experience with button tufted bedding and foams.

Out of 854 people, 61% (524 people) said their experience was excellent. They prefer a mattress with buttons that provide great comfort and good sleep.

20% (172 people) said they prefer foam bedding because the buttons are uncomfortable. However, they also added that they prefer dense and hard surfaces for a peaceful sleep.

19% (158 people) said they are equally comfortable with both types of bedding, and buttons or hard foam do not affect them.
